Many EU countries are limiting the use of single-use plastics in food packaging. A regulation change that comes with the consumer trends bidding for the most sustainable products for some time now. The primary packaging sector is actively working on finding solutions that will merge these two sensitive issues. To rise to this challenge, Hinojosa Packaging Xàtiva has developed Barket, an innovative corrugated cardboard tray, octagon-shaped and heat-sealing proving to be the ecofriendly alternative to the traditional single-use plastic trays for fruit and vegetables.
Now, its innovative and sustainable design has won the WorldStar Awards 2021, the most important awards in the sector, globally. Made out of recycled corrugated cardboard, Barket has a lesser environmental impact when compared with those manufactured with other materials, whilst retaining identical product safety benefits.
Its structure makes it possible to fit a fine heat-sealed film layer on top to protect the product. This is a process that can be performed by the machines owned by agricultural businesses and which they already use for plastic trays.
Thus, the use of plastic is reduced to up to 95%. Furthermore, it is a 100% recyclable packaging since both materials (cardboard and film) are easily detachable for they disposal into their corresponding recycling containers.
