Sustainable packaging: a major concern
Various studies have already shown that retailers and consumers currently demand more sustainable packaging when making purchasing decisions. In addition, the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive, which came into force on 3 July 2019, aims to reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.
What has triggered all this?
Major brands and manufacturers are re-evaluating their packaging strategies to find sustainable alternatives for beverages, eliminating the need to use single-use shrink-wrap plastics when transporting multiple bottles. These solutions are biodegradable and can be easily adapted to any bottle on the market.
Consumers, regulators and retailers have long been calling for an end to single-use plastic, opting instead for sustainable packaging alternatives:

As for retail, it has already been observed that they are beginning to reject in their stores products with packaging made from single-use plastics.

What gave rise to all this?
While the industry continues to improve the recycling rates of plastic bottles and containers, most secondary packaging—such as shrink wrap—still falls into the single-use plastic category. Although it is important to note that shrink film is easy to produce, lightweight and very useful, its environmental impact is catastrophic if it is not recycled.
Hundreds of millions of tonnes of SUP are produced annually and end their useful life in oceans and landfill sites.
This situation has generated considerable pressure from governments, environmental groups and consumers themselves, who are calling for biodegradable and sustainable packaging solutions. In this respect, paper-based packaging is far more attractive to consumers and distributors and has an impact along the supply chain. Any alternative to single-use plastic must also be easy to transport, handle and store.
It must also be adaptable, since the wide variety of bottles on the market requires solutions that are simple and scalable in order to meet demand.
