For packaging to be effective, it is not enough for it to just protect what is inside. Sometimes it also needs to ensure that the content do not end up in the wrong hands.

Detergents, medicines, paints, solvents and even batteries. Due to their composition, some products can be dangerous and require specific safety measures to avoid unnecessary accidents. In such cases, having a secure packaging is not only prudent, but also essential if the product is to be marketed in Europe.

More specifically, according to the Royal Decree 255/2003 on the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous preparations, all containers intended for the public that contain toxic or corrosive substances or that present a risk of aspiration capable of damaging our lungs must include a child-resistant safety fastening.

However, what can we do to ensure that the packaging is really effective and avoid risks? By taking advice from the best professionals and certifying the packaging through official organisations.

AISE protocol for detergents

The AISE organisation has been acting as the voice of European detergents and maintenance products industry since 1952. Whether through design, safety or the promotion of sustainability, Brussels is responsible for leading industrial initiatives focused on process improvement.

Among other things, they have a protocol that enables detergent manufacturers to certify their products, guaranteeing that they use safe packaging. In addition, they promote the informative platform Cleanright.eu, a space that advises consumers virtually on good cleaning practices at home: safe and sustainable.

Hinojosa case study: safe and sustainable packaging

At Hinojosa Packaging Group, we develop packaging solutions designed to facilitate the routine of consumers and manufacturers. For this reason, our criteria always include safety

Proof of this is the packaging for water-soluble capsules that we produced for the hygiene and cleaning products manufacturer SPB. An innovative packaging that was also awarded at the Liderpack 2023 Awards

In addition to being a clear commitment to sustainability and made from 100% recyclable materials, it was developed with a child-resistant safety lock. What is its main purpose? To prevent children from acceding to the capsules inside.

Guided by the AISE protocol, we work hand in hand with the Instituto Tecnológico de Producto Infantil y Ocio AIJU (Technological Institute for Children’s Products and Leisure AIJU) to obtain CIC approval. A recognition that our product was able to withstand at least the same number of openings and closings as the number of water-soluble capsules in the box (28 capsules). The test was passed with flying colours. Not only did it withstand the required 28, but in total we exceeded 100 opening and closing cycles

Furthermore, with the support of the organisation, the solution was tested with children up to 4 years old and the result was a success. None of the children were able to open the packaging, which it gave CIC approval under the AISE protocol through the Technological Institute of Children’s Products and Leisure AIJU.

However, the story is not finished yet. Driven by the need to develop safer and more sustainable packaging solutions, from our workplaces we are committed day by day to innovation and responsible design that focuses on the consumer, and also on the planet.
